A sump pump is the mechanical answer to a water problem where gravity has run out. In Shreveport that's most commonly a crawlspace where the perimeter drain can't daylight, a low basement in an older Highland-area house, or a flat yard where a French drain has no downhill point to reach. Done right, a sump system runs unattended for a decade. Done wrong, it fails at 2 a.m. on the day you need it most.
The sump belongs at the low point of a drainage collection system: the outlet of a curtain drain, the discharge of an interior perimeter drain, the pit at the bottom of a yard French drain that can't gravity-daylight. It is the piece of equipment that lifts water from where it collected to where it can be released. Sumps are wet all winter, dry all summer, and pump against pressure — cheap pumps die on that duty cycle.
The basin is a plastic or concrete pit set into the ground, typically 18-24 inches diameter, 24-30 inches deep, with a perforated wall to let ground water in. Basin size matters: too small and the pump short-cycles itself to death; too big and the pump runs longer than needed. For a typical Shreveport crawlspace application, an 18-inch basin with a solid, sealed lid (odor control + safety) is the norm. The basin sits on 4-6 inches of washed stone to prevent silt intrusion.
A residential sump pump you actually want: cast-iron body (not plastic), 1/3 or 1/2 HP for most applications, a solid tethered float switch (not a vertical rod switch — those hang up), and a 3+ year manufacturer warranty. Brands with a track record in this market: Zoeller M53/M63/M98, Liberty 237/247/257, Wayne CDU. Cheap $80 pumps from the big-box store are $80 for a reason and we get called to replace them within 2-4 years. A quality pump costs $250-$400 and lasts 8-15 years.
The single most common sump failure is a power outage during a storm — which is also the exact moment the pump is needed most. A battery-backup pump sits above the primary pump in the same basin, has its own float, its own controller, and its own deep-cycle battery. When the power fails or the primary quits, the backup takes over automatically. On critical installations we also spec a water-powered backup (pressurized city water drives an ejector) as a third layer where a metered water hookup is available. A single-pump install with no backup is a bet against the weather.
The discharge is 1.5-inch or 2-inch schedule-40 PVC, with a check valve immediately above the pump (prevents backflow, prevents pump wear), routed out through the rim joist or crawlspace vent, and daylighted at least 10 feet from the foundation. Freeze protection matters even in Shreveport — a discharge line that freezes in a February cold snap dead-heads the pump. A small weep hole drilled at 45 degrees just above the check valve prevents ice-lock in the outdoor run.
A water-level alarm on the basin — a $25 float switch tied to a 90-decibel buzzer — is the cheapest insurance in the whole system. It goes off when water rises above the pump's normal cutout, telling you the pump has failed before the water is ankle-deep. Wi-Fi alarms exist and are worth the small upcharge for anyone who travels or has a rental property. Real-time monitoring alerts to your phone are worth even more.
Louisiana plumbing code and City of Shreveport ordinance both require that sump discharge be directed to a legal discharge point — not into the sanitary sewer (that's an illegal cross-connection), and not so as to flood a neighboring property. Daylight to the owner's own property, tie into a permitted storm system, or use a dry well or infiltration basin on the owner's lot. A licensed contractor knows the rules.

A quality cast-iron pump: 8-15 years. A cheap plastic pump: 2-5 years. Battery-backup pumps last similarly to their primaries but the deep-cycle battery needs replacement every 3-5 years.
It can. Shreveport hits freezing about 30-40 nights a year, and a full deep-freeze once every few years. Weep hole above the check valve prevents ice-lock; burying most of the outdoor run below frost line (only 6-12 inches here) helps.
