Erosion and standing water are two sides of the same problem: water moving through a landscape that isn't set up to handle it. In NW Louisiana, the combination of heavy clay soils, steep bluff-side lots, and intense rainfall events makes erosion control a real and ongoing homeowner concern — especially along the Red River corridor and in the older bluffside neighborhoods of Shreveport.
Bluffside lots in North Highlands, Fairfield, and along the Red River south of I-20. Backyard slopes in South Highlands and Broadmoor where lots step down toward creeks or drainage easements. New-construction cut-and-fill slopes in the newer Bossier subdivisions that haven't yet established vegetation. Anywhere a downspout, driveway, or yard drainage discharge concentrates runoff onto unprotected soil. The Twelve Mile Bayou and Cross Bayou floodplains have their own erosion characteristics — meander-cut banks and periodic re-shaping.
1. Sheet erosion — thin loss of topsoil across a broad slope; hardest to see, easiest to correct with vegetation and blankets. 2. Rill erosion — small channels 1-6 inches deep from concentrated runoff; usually means grade is wrong or discharge is missing. 3. Gully erosion — deep cuts, sometimes many feet, from major runoff events; needs both grade correction and structural stabilization. 4. Streambank erosion — active bank cutting along a creek, bayou, or drainage easement; often requires engineered riprap or bioengineering.
The cheapest and most sustainable erosion control is grass and roots. For newly disturbed slopes, hydro-seeding with a Bermuda or fescue-Bermuda mix under an erosion-control blanket (jute or straw-coconut) gives a fighting chance of establishment. On steeper slopes, deeper-rooted natives — switchgrass, little bluestem, oakleaf hydrangea, native ferns — hold soil in ways that turf grass alone cannot. Woody plants (crepe myrtles, wax myrtles, native oaks) belong on the longer-term slope stabilization list.
For slopes steeper than 3:1 (33%), or for banks actively cutting, structural erosion control becomes necessary. Options: riprap (broken stone laid over filter fabric) at the toe of a slope or along a channel; segmented retaining walls (Versa-Lok, Keystone) where the slope needs to be terraced back; engineered geogrid-reinforced walls for higher retention; gabion baskets in specific situations; concrete or timber crib walls on the older-school end. Each solution has a right context and a wrong context — a good contractor matches the tool to the site.
Where erosion is water moving too fast, standing water is water not moving at all. Solutions are inversions of each other: for erosion, slow the water down; for standing water, give it a path. Often the same drainage plan handles both — a swale routes water across a slope at the right velocity, an infiltration basin at the bottom absorbs it. LDEQ's construction stormwater rules apply to any land-disturbing activity over 1 acre and require an active SWPPP (Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan) with silt fence, inlet protection, stabilized construction entrance, and revegetation plan. Residential erosion-control work below the threshold has fewer regulatory requirements but the same physics — a silt fence at the downhill edge of any bare-soil area is best practice regardless.
A retaining wall isn't 'erosion control' in the strict sense; it's slope engineering that makes erosion irrelevant by holding the soil in place. For a Shreveport backyard where a 6-8 foot slope keeps re-eroding no matter what vegetation gets planted, a terraced wall (2-4 shorter tiers with planted terraces between) is often the durable answer. Walls over 4 feet in Louisiana typically require engineered design and permitting; walls under 4 feet on residential lots don't.
Vegetative solutions on a small slope: $800-$3,000. Riprap installation at a channel toe: $3,000-$8,000. Segmented retaining wall (residential, under 4 feet): $4,500-$12,000. Engineered wall over 4 feet: $8,000-$40,000+. Bioengineering combinations vary widely.
Yes — for a small, mostly-flat area, DIY erosion-control blanket over a hydroseeded slope is very achievable. For steeper slopes, wetter soils, or work near a public right-of-way, a licensed contractor makes sense.

Warning signs: fresh soil visible at the base of the slope, exposed roots, small gullies after rain, tilted trees, cracks in the flat ground at the top of the slope. Any of those is worth a professional evaluation.
